Chinese 24-Hour Circadian Clock

Your symptoms and time of day could be a hint to healing

The Chinese 24-hour circadian clock, also known as the Chinese Organ Clock, is a traditional concept that associates specific organs with different times of the day. This system is based on the belief that each organ has a peak functioning time, which can influence health and well-being.

The clock is divided into 12 two-hour segments, each corresponding to a specific organ. Here’s a breakdown of the organs and their associated times:

  • 1:00 AM - 3:00 AM: Liver

  • 3:00 AM - 5:00 AM: Lungs

  • 5:00 AM - 7:00 AM: Large Intestine

  • 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM: Stomach

  • 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Spleen

  • 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM: Heart

  • 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM: Small Intestine

  • 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Bladder

  • 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM: Kidneys

  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM: Pericardium

  • 9:00 PM - 11:00 PM: Triple Burner

  • 11:00 PM - 1:00 AM: Gallbladder

Significance of the Clock

Understanding the Chinese 24-hour circadian clock can provide insights into:

  • Health Practices: Aligning activities such as eating, sleeping, and exercising with the organ clock may enhance overall health.

  • Symptoms and Issues: Experiencing discomfort or health issues during specific times may indicate an imbalance in the corresponding organ.

  • Preventive Care: Awareness of these rhythms can aid in preventive health measures and lifestyle adjustments.

The Five Elements and Emotional Connections

  • Wood (Liver/Gallbladder) – Anger/Frustration: Governs emotions of anger, irritability, and resentment. When balanced, it provides assertiveness; in excess, it can lead to stress, headaches, and liver qi stagnation.

  • Fire (Heart/Small Intestine) – Joy/Anxiety: Associated with joy, passion, and enthusiasm. While normal joy is healthy, excessive fire (or lack thereof) can lead to anxiety, insomnia, or mania.

  • Earth (Spleen/Stomach) – Worry/Pensiveness: Linked to thinking, overthinking, worry, and sympathy. Imbalances often manifest as digestive issues, sluggishness, or constant worrying.

  • Metal (Lung/Large Intestine) – Grief/Sadness: Controls sadness, grief, and detachment. Chronic, unresolved grief or loss can deplete the lungs' energy, impacting breathing and immunity.

  • Water (Kidneys/Bladder) – Fear/Insecurity: Associated with fear, insecurity, and willpower. Chronic fear can severely deplete the body's foundational energy (Kidney Jing).

The Organ Clock encourages mindfulness and awareness of one's body. By recognizing the signs of fatigue or stress linked to specific organ times, individuals can take proactive measures to restore balance, whether through rest, nutrition, or lifestyle adjustments.
