Winter Survival Guide with Chinese Medicine

ree

In Chinese Medicine winter is associated with the Water element, the Kidneys, and the energy of deep restoration. It’s time to slow down, conserve energy, and nourish both body and spirit. But it’s also a season that can leave us feeling sluggish, stiff, and more prone to colds and fatigue.

Here are some things to consider that will help you enjoy the beauty and stillness of winter, while feeling your best.

  1. Rest Like Nature Intended – Winter is nature’s time of hibernation. Many animals hibernate, or at the very least, become less active and conserve their energy. Plants rest in dormancy until the spring sun cues them to bloom again. People are the same way. In Chinese Medicine deep rest nourishes the Kidneys and replenishes our energy stores. Go to bed earlier, sleep longer, and embrace the art of slowing down. Conserving your life force energy or qi and following the path of Mother Nature will ultimately help you stay healthier.

  1. Keep your Body Warm – Most of us know how to dress for a Midwest winter, but it’s a good reminder that staying warm is your best defense against harmful pathogens that can invade a stressed body. Be sure to use a scarf or neck gator when going outside to keep the chill air away from this vulnerable area. Slippers and shawls indoors also help keep the chill of winter away from your body. Remember, keep warm to keep the stress away!

  1. Eat for Warmth – The cold months call for warming, nourishing foods that support Kidney energy and keep your digestion strong. We recommend:

Bone broth & hearty soups

Slow-cooked meats & root veggies

Ginger, cinnamon, and cloves to stoke your inner fire

  1. Move to Keep the Qi Flowing – Winter’s cold can stiffen both joints and energy flow. Gentle movement like walking, stretching, or Qi Gong keeps your circulation strong and prevents stagnation. Getting outside, even in freezing temps, is essential for your mood and circadian rhythm. Dress warmly and let the winter sun hit your face.

  1. Acupuncture Treatments - Regular acupuncture treatments help balance energy, boost immunity, and calm the mind, so you can enter the new year feeling your best. Schedule your session today to set the foundation for a peaceful, healthy winter season.

Winter isn’t just something to “get through”—it’s a season that, when embraced, builds resilience for the year ahead. By aligning with nature’s rhythm, nourishing your body, and keeping your Qi strong, you’ll emerge from winter feeling stronger, healthier, and ready for spring’s renewal.

Happy Holidays!!
