The heart is the organ associated with the Fire element, and it plays a vital role in maintaining overall health during the summer. When our heart (fire) energy is imbalanced, we may lack joy. Agitation, nervous exhaustion, heartburn, and insomnia are other indicators of imbalance in this area.
To nurture your heart, it is crucial to engage in activities that bring you joy and make your heart sing. This can include spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature. When the fire element is balanced, true fulfillment and the equilibrium between heart and mind are our greatest rewards.
Keeping Cool and Hydrated
As the weather gets hotter during summer, it is crucial to keep our bodies cool and hydrated. Consuming foods and beverages that have cooling properties can help balance the excess heat. Some examples of cooling foods include watermelon, cucumber, mint, and green tea. Fish and seafood are also recommended; in Chinese medicine theory these foods have a cooling property, therefore best eaten in hotter seasons.
In the summer, eat with moderation (we tend to get more indigestion in the summer months) and avoid excessive consumption of spicy, greasy, and fried foods, as they can generate internal heat and disrupt the body's harmony.

Summer is a time of high energy, and the emotion associated with summer is joy. But it is equally important to find balance by incorporating adequate rest and relaxation - which can be achieved through practices like meditation, deep breathing, or taking short naps at midday when needed.
